Aquamarine: The Mystical Gem of the Sea

Aquamarine’s beautiful and unusual characteristics have long enchanted cultures across civilization. It’s unique color and crystal-like transparency make it virtually undetectable when submerged in sea water. Today, it is celebrated as the birthstone of March.

In the language of the ancient Roman Empire, the name “aquamarine” derives from aqua marina, meaning “sea water.” In Greek mythology, aquamarine was believed to be the tears of sea nymphs. As they danced upon the waves, their tears fell into the water and crystallized into this gemstone.  As protection for their sea voyages, ancient Roman and Greek sailors would often carry aquamarine or carve it into images of Poseidon or the sea goddess Amphitrite.

In Indian mythology, aquamarine was associated with the ancient ocean god Varuna who represented wisdom and purity. 

In medieval Europe, aquamarine was thought to possess mystical healing powers, calming the mind and bringing wisdom. It was also known as the mermaids’ treasure, and was  said to grant the wearer foresight into the future. During the European Renaissance, artists drew inspiration from aquamarine, using it to depict the pure serenity of the sea and sky. Elizabeth II Queen of England (1926-2022) even owned a magnificent aquamarine tiara, symbolizing wisdom and tranquility.
