Shen Yun Instrument Tales

Shen Yun Collections

We are delighted to announce the launch of Shen Yun Collections new Instrument Charms! This collection features designs inspired by the most distinctive Chinese and Western instruments in the Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra—such as the erhu, pipa, violin, and flute. Music lovers and instrument enthusiasts won’t want to miss out!

Erhu

The erhu has a history of over 4,000 years. Its sound is gentle yet powerful, melancholic yet stirring, making it one of the most expressive instruments. Played well, the erhu can also vividly portray the delicate beauty of a young maiden, the grandeur of ancient battles, and even the sounds of birds and galloping horses.

The erhu has two strings—the outer and inner strings—which allow for intricate vibrato and glissando, giving the instrument its remarkable emotional depth. Its resonator, or soundbox, amplifies and enhances the vibrations of the strings, producing the erhu’s signature, soul-stirring timbre. This unique sound has left a lasting impression on many Shen Yun fans.

Choose Shen Yun Collections’ erhu pendant, and let the subtle and profound charm of the East accompany you always.

Pipa

The pipa derives its name from its playing techniques: pushing the fingers forward is called “pi” (批), while pulling them backward is “pa” (把). According to the Jin Dynasty text “Pipa Fu,” the pipa’s rhythm and sound can dispel negative thoughts and cultivate righteousness.

The pipa is one of the most challenging Chinese instruments to master. Ancient Chinese pipas featured a round body, straight neck, and silk strings. Measuring three feet, five inches, it symbolized harmony between heaven, earth, humanity, and the five elements. Its four strings represent the four seasons, and its twelve frets reflect the Chinese musical system of twelve tones.

The modern pipa traces its origins to the Western Regions, where it traveled along the Silk Road. It can be seen in ancient murals and is written about in mystical legends. The famous Dunhuang Caves that are covered in Buddhist art feature flying heavenly beauties playing pipas.

Choose Shen Yun Collections’ pipa pendant, and let the heavenly melodies full of inspiring culture accompany you every day.

Violin

The violin is the highest-pitched string instrument in the Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra. As one of the most essential instruments in Western orchestras, the violin is often called the “Queen of Instruments” due to its popularity and widespread use. However, mastering the violin requires years of dedicated practice.

The modern violin first appeared in 16th-century Italy during the Renaissance. Mathematics played a vital role in the arts with proportions and sequences forming the basis of aesthetics. Creating a master violin requires the precision of a mathematician and the sensitivity of an artist—a perfect fusion of art and science.

Choose Shen Yun Collections‘ violin pendant and experience life with the elegance of classical artistry.

Flute

Known for its enchanting tone, the flute is the highest-pitched woodwind instrument in the Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra. It is also one of the oldest known musical instruments, with early flutes crafted from ebony, coconut wood, and even bone dating back to the Stone Age.

In Greek mythology, the flute was created by the goddess of wisdom Athena. Another form of the flute was created by the nature god Pan from river reeds that his beloved had transformed into, symbolizing the flute’s deep connection to nature. In ancient Egypt, flutes were associated with royalty and it was believed that they could communicate with the Gods.
