And he was right.

It was the Spring Purification Festival and the year was 353 AD. Lofty-spirited poets gathered together to dwell upon the beauty of nature, the inescapable sadness inflicted by time and fate, and the grandeur of the immeasurable universe—and of course, they also gathered to drink.

It was in this momentous and boisterous atmosphere that the greatest work of Chinese calligraphy was written: Wang Xizhi’s Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion.

The work was revered by the greatest emperor of the greatest dynasty, Tang Taizong, who legend says took it to his tomb. In generation after generation, the masterpiece has been held up as a major achievement in the realm of calligraphy. Read more about the history of the Preface here.
